Containerization And Its History
It has been 60 years since containers began to carry goods across seas. It has the ability to carry 60% of shipped goods value by water/sea. The idea of using this mode to transport goods weren’t originally created for shipping. It was practised in different forms for as long from the 1700s; boxes that take similar shapes to present day containers were used for inland transportation in England those days using horses. Small sized containers were even used at the times of the US war for convenience of loading and unloading supplies in higher speed at times of peril.
What happened before?
Trading was present in the world since many years, dating back to Egyptians, Greeks and Romans where the emperors stood. However, it was never an easy task for them to load and unload these goods and transport them across seas. There was only one method for them to transport their good from here and there. The use of wooden crates and sacks was used as the only method to transport goods. Also, unlike the containers of today, loading and unloading of the goods from a ship required much labour. To overcome all these drawbacks, containerization was introduced.
Intermodalism
This is the process of transporting the very same buy shipping container in Perth around in an efficient manner all around without any interruptions or change of containers through different modes of transportation. This could be between ships, trains or trucks. In order for this process to take place effectively, terminals needed to be present. The reason for this is that, this would be the place that the good would be put into whichever other type of transportation they need to. For instance, at the port, the containers will be taken from the ships and put into trucks. Once this is done, they will be taken to their final destination or wherever they are supposed to go to next.
Globalization’s impact on shipping
Nowadays buying 40 foot containers for sale is not a new thing. However, back in the mid 1960s, the first international containership voyage took place. This happened exactly ten years after the sailing of the first ever converted containership. Eventually, with the war, globalization and other factors, the use of these became quite common for it is considered a very simple and convenient method of moving goods.
Containers at present
This has even been considered as a driver of globalization. For 60 years, containerization has managed to help man transport their goods from one place to another. Slowly improving with added features due to the development of technology, this is by far the most effective method we can use to move goods within and between countries.
